Tiny Rodent

by | Oct 18, 2024 | Poetry

Small, new born. Mother is nurturing the best she can.
Chasing and fleeing just like she was taught. Food is necessary. Food is life.
Tiny rodent, learn to flee. Learn to be. Mother is doing what she can to keep ten tiny mice living.
She makes the home very comfortable for you. She feeds you. She keeps you alive.
Is this not enough, she asks. This is how I was taught. Now, you listen closely.
The world is afraid, and you must not stand. You have to learn the ways.
It is necessary. You have to make me proud, and you must learn what I say.
Just like I was taught. Just like I was.

I am very fond of this poem. I like overall quick and hushed tone that it is written in. I feel that the tone portrays an accurate depiction of the nature of mice as it is snappy, much like the all too short life span of a mouse, and it feels quiet much like mice themselves. I also like the themes of motherly love and care, I feel that a mother mouse of a group of babies (a litter?) is a great method of portraying how a mother is often times willing to go great lengths to keep their children safe and taken care of. Overall, very good job by the author.
