Some say to constantly look forward
past mistakes are not to be dwelled on
I believe that it is a necessary evil
directing us to a better future
even though some may wish against it
regret will get us nowhere
If handled carelessly, its teeth may sink to your dermis
if ignored, it may cause problems in other areas of your life
if dwelled on, can cause paranoia
Its monstrous legs of eight can wrap tightly around our minds
yet its teeth are oddly human
yellow, grotesque and rotting
worn from feasting on the minds of millions
I suppose that the past is like a spider
Some avoid them like the plague because both can ruin a good moment
Like spiders, without the past, our lives would be much worse
though many could argue that without spiders their lives would be much better
Perhaps the spider is invisible, giant, wrapped around the world
or perhaps the spider lives with all of us
hiding perfectly out of sight to coexist with us
After all, scientists estimate ten spiders per room
hiding in the cracks, crevices, and holes
Perhaps inside one of those openings,
is the monstrous past we avoid
watching us, following us, absorbing our heat
so that its offspring can survive
and live on …
just like the past
