The Monsters Behind our Masks

by | Nov 2, 2026 | Poetry

The Monsters behind our masks,
Wicked smiles,
Sharp teeth,
Claws made from our failures,

The Mask covering our Monster,
Beautifully deep eyes,
Smiles that could light a room,
Teeth like pearls,
Hands sculpted by our achievements,

The Monster in the room can not always be seen,
Sometimes the Monster is so hidden it is never seen,
Other times the Monster breaks out and takes control,
Ripping the Mask and showing their true self,

We wear our Masks to hide the unwanted truth,
Our secrets,
Our fears,
Our insecurities,
We wear our Masks to be accepted,

When the world goes quiet our Monsters talk,
Talking to us about the truths and lies,
Telling us we should be scared,
Scared of it,
The Monster.

Though mostly talking about the lies we tell ourselves,
The lies that we will fail,
The lies of fear,
The lies of insecurities,
The lies of not being accepted,

The lies telling us we should be scared,
Scared of the truth,
Scared of the Masks,
Scared of adversity,
Scared of life,

Maybe the monster is right about some things,
Maybe we should be scared of the beauty of the masks,
The lies of the masks,
The truth of the masks,

The masks created to protect us have become our prison,
We become unable to remove the mask,
It takes control,
Holding us hostage in our own minds and bodies,
We stop understanding which thoughts are truth and which ones are lies,

Our Monsters aren’t the true evils,
Being human does not make you a Monster,
Imperfections, adversity, fear, and failure,
Are the truths our Masks turn into Monsters,

We look for Monsters in the dark,
In what we are afraid to see,
But the Masks that hides our Monsters,
Maybe the Monster we become.
