How it is currently:

Currently, every year is split into two times. Savings time, and Standard time. These change around March and November each year and cause nationwide problems. An increase in heart attacks and suicide rates, not to mention the drowsiness, makes this the worst times of the year.

The two ways we can fix it:

There are two main ways we can fix this. We can either do permanent Savings time or permanent Standard time. Each have their own pros and cons that I will go over.

Savings time Pros and Cons:

This is the time we get during the summer months. Savings time helps prevent crime and crashes in the evening, but the mornings will be darker, which makes morning crashes worse and makes waking up harder. Permanent Savings time was tried in the 1970s in the U.S. and was changed back within nine months due to widespread problems.

Standard time Pros and Cons:

This is the time we get during winter months. Standard time is the healthiest and prevents medical problems from getting worse. Standard time is also linked to fewer morning crashes and higher productivity rates in people. It also prevents drowsiness and helps you wake up. Some cons would be higher crime rates, more evening car crashes, and less free time in the evenings.

What we should do:

While it is up to you to decide which option you would want more, Standard time is the best for mental and physical health. Permanent Standard time is already used in Arizona and Hawaii and is also easier to pass into law than Savings time. While Savings time helps with crime and afternoon crashes, Standard time would save more lives in the end.
